At Big Deal Company, we are dedicated to bringing “Joy to the Job”. We believe that enhancing employee engagement and cultivating a strong company culture through events and team-building activities are crucial for both inspiring joy and overall success. A thriving workplace should be built on a foundation of engaged employees who are passionate about their work and connected to their colleagues. We’ve pulled together a list of actionable strategies to help your business create a strong and thriving culture of success: Foster Open Communication Best practices include encouraging open communication channels within your entire organization. Make sure to regularly solicit feedback from your employees and create opportunities where they can share their thoughts freely. ACTION ITEM: Implement regular “town hall” meetings, Q&A sessions, and anonymous suggestion boxes to ensure that every voice is being heard. Recognize and Reward Achievements Recognition can be a powerful motivator. Celebrate both individual and team success to boost morale and encourage a culture of appreciation. ACTION ITEM: Establish an employee recognition program with monthly awards, public acknowledgments, and tangible rewards like gift cards or extra days off. At Big Deal Company, we’ve implemented our own system of recognition with monthly “Woot, Woots” for exemplary work, “BIG Brags” on social media, and our yearly “Biggie Awards” (think Dundee’s from The Office). Promote a Healthy Work-Life Balance A healthy work-life balance is crucial for employee well-being. Ensure your policies support employees in balancing their professional and personal lives. ACTION ITEM: Offer flexible working hours, and remote work options, and promote the use of vacation days to help employees refresh and recharge. Invest in Professional Development Providing opportunities for growth shows employees that you value their long-term commitment and success. ACTION ITEM: Create a professional development program that includes workshops, online courses, and mentoring opportunities. Organize Engaging Events and Team-Building Activities Fun and carefully thought out events and team-building activities are excellent ways to foster camaraderie and a sense of belonging. At Big Deal Company, we gather together as a team, every quarter. We call it Big Deal Bites & Beverages. It’s a fun, and informal way to stay connected. ACTION ITEM: Plan regular team outings, workshops, and socials! Consider activities like escape rooms, cooking classes, or volunteer days that require teamwork and collaboration. Create and Build a Positive Work Environment If your team works on-site, creating a positive work environment can greatly impact employee satisfaction and increase productivity. ACTION ITEM: Enhance the physical workspace with comfortable furniture, calming lighting, plants, and art. Encourage a culture of kindness and support through team-building exercises and positive reinforcement. Encourage Employee Involvement in Decision-Making Involving your employees in both large and small decisions will increase their investment in the company’s success. People feel valued when they are heard. ACTION ITEM: Form committees and focus groups where employees can contribute to company decisions. Actively include them in important strategic planning work. Support Health and Wellness Programs Investing in health and wellness programs and gym discounts show your employees that you care about their overall well-being. ACTION ITEM: Investigate discounted gym memberships for your team. Offer free Mental health days, and workshops on stress management and healthy living. Enhance Onboarding and Orientation Programs Strong onboarding programs can set the ton for a new employee. They help them integrate smoothly into company culture and sets them up for success! ACTION ITEM: Develop a comprehensive and thorough onboarding process that includes mentorships, detailed training, and a robust welcome from the entire team. Technology is Engagement’s Friend! There are so many tools, apps, and programs out there! Use technology to keep employees connected, especially in remote or hybrid work settings. ACTION ITEM: Utilize tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Asana to facilitate consistent communication and keep up on project tasks. Boosting employee engagement and building a strong company culture requires a plan and a multi-channel approach. By modeling and utilizing these action items for fostering open communication, recognizing achievements, professional development, organizing engaging events, and more, you can create a workplace where employees thrive and feel valued. At Big Deal Company, we’re committed to helping organizations achieve these goals through expert-led events and team building activities. Silent auctions are a common staple of nonprofit fundraising events. They offer a unique opportunity to engage donors and raise significant funds for a worthy cause. At Big Deal Company, we have first-hand knowledge of what items attract the most interest. We are always on the lookout for that special something that will generate the highest interest and bids! Gone are the days of gift baskets and gift cards. Today’s fundraising auction bidder craves experiences and high-end ticket items. We have a good pulse on what is popular in Northern Colorado (mountain weekend getaways, professional sports packages, etc.). Follow along to see some of the top silent auction items that guest love to bid on nationwide, backed by anecdotes from successful fundraising events to illustrate their impact. 1. Exclusive Vacation Packages Imagine offering a trip to a private island, a chartered fishing trip in an exotic location, or a luxury ski resort. Vacation packages consistently draw high bids due to their unique and experiential nature. For instance, at a recent charity gala supporting children’s education, a week-long stay at a Tuscan villa, including cooking classes and wine tours, sparked a bidding war. The package ultimately sold for $10,000, significantly exceeding expectations and providing essential funds for educational programs. (Charitybuzz. (n.d.). Retrieved from Charitybuzz) That might be an outlier, but a vacation package that includes a luxurious stay and engaging activities, can garner a lot of excitement. Take some time to research popular travel destinations and pull together a package that will inspire guests to dream and bid! 2. VIP Event Tickets Tickets to major events, such as the Super Bowl, the Oscars, or Broadway premieres, are always a hit. These items are sought after because they offer access to experiences that are typically hard to come by. At a fundraising dinner for a popular arts nonprofit, VIP tickets to a sold-out Broadway show, including a backstage meet-and-greet with the cast, fetch an astounding $7500, supporting the nonprofit’s outreach initiatives. (BiddingForGood. (n.d.). Retrieved from BiddingForGood) The Super Bowl or the Oscars might be out of reach, but could you partner with a local business who might have box seats for a local professional sports team - Broncos, Rockies, or Avalanche? Throw in a gift card for dinner out and tickets to a game, and you can easily pull together a winning ticket! 3. Celebrity Meet-and-Greets Donors relish the opportunity to meet their favorite celebrities, whether they are athletes, musicians, or actors. At a silent auction for a healthcare charity, a meet-and-greet with a popular TV star generated immense excitement. The chance to have dinner with the celebrity saw competitive bidding, and pulled in a $5000 contribution in support of medical research! (Charity Navigator. (n.d.). Retrieved from Charity Navigator) Northern Colorado is a long way from the bright lights of Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make bank on this type of experience! Check with Colorado Sports Teams or Universities - there may be a favorite figure who would be willing to donate an evening with a fan. 4. Unique Artwort Art can sometimes be a tricky item to auction - after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! However, original artwork or signed pieces from well-known artists can often attract art enthusiasts and collectors. A piece by a renowned artist donated to an environmental conservation fundraiser not only drew attention for its beauty but also for its cause. The artwork sold for $8000, funding important projects and raising awareness for the nonprofit’s mission.(Charitybuzz. (n.d.). Retrieved from Charitybuzz) There are a lot of talented artists in Northern Colorado - perhaps you can add to the package with a pair of tickets to the Denver Art Museum, too? 5. Fine Dining Experiences Exclusive dining experiences, such as a private chef’s dinner or a wine pairing event, are perennial favorites. At a recent silent auction to benefit a homeless shelter, a package that included a private dinner for ten prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, along with a curated win selection, secured a $6000 bid. This experience not only provided a memorable evening for the winning bidder but also significant support for the shelter. (Charitybuzz. (n.d.). Retrieved from Charitybuzz) Dinners for bidders and their guests also help to further the nonprofit mission. More people are exposed to the mission and brand, and the experience may inspire attendees to donate to the charity in return for a fun evening! 6. Luxury Goods High-end items such as designer handbags, jewelry, and watches are always popular. At a gala for a youth mentorship program, a donated Rolex watch attracted a lot of attention. The bidding was intense, and it ultimately sold for $9000, helping to fund mentorship opportunities and other programs for the nonprofit. (Paddle8. (n.d.). Retrieved from Paddle8) Does your organization have a large and generous donor who has a jewelry collection? This type of partnership is a way to combine planned giving and an event auction for maximum impact! 7. Sports Memorabilia Autographed sports memorabilia, such as jerseys, balls, and equipment, are particularly appealing to sports fans. They are extremely popular auction items at golf tournaments! At a recent fundraiser for a community sports league, a baseball signed by a Hall of Fame player ignited some fierce bidding competition. The item sold for $4500, supporting the league’s efforts to provide sports equipment and facilities for underprivileged youth. (BiddingForGood. (n.d.). Retrieved from BiddingForGood) To maximize the success of your auction, consider the interests and passions of your donors. High-quality, unique items that offer exclusive experiences or rare opportunities tend to attract the highest bid. Additionally, storytelling can enhance the appeal of auction items. Consider enlisting the help of a professional auctioneer to help drum up excitement for the package you are trying to sell. The auctioneer can share anecdotes about how a winning bid will leave a lasting impression in the lives of your organization’s beneficiaries - inspiring more generous bidding! Set against the stunning backdrop of their beautifully landscaped backyard, twinkling lights from the gorgeous trees provided by Primary Event Rentals created an enchanting atmosphere. The shimmering pool and festive cabana added to the charm, making it a night to remember. The theme for the evening was “All White”, and guests embraced the dress code, adding an elegant touch to the celebration. The top-notch entertainment featured the incredible Branden Sipes, whose music set the perfect tone for the night. Adding an element of fun and surprise, a talented roaming magician captivated the guests with his amazing tricks! Richard’s restaurant catering crew provided a delectable spread of food and manned the fully stocked bar, ensuring that every palate and guest was pleased. The highlight of the night, of course, was Brenda’s reaction. Completely surprised and overwhelmed with joy, her face lit up the moment she realized the celebration was in her honor. It was particularly special to watch her shocked face when she realized that her daughter and new son-in-law had made a special surprise trip from their home in Texas. The evening was truly magical, filled with light, love, and laughter. A special thanks to everyone who helped make Brenda’s birthday so special. It was a night we will all cherish for years to come! Here are 10 proven strategies to drive foot traffic to your business events. How do I draw foot traffic to my business event? Generate Social Media Buzz Create buzz ahead of your event by leveraging social media. Remember: the more popular an event appears, the more likely passerby are to stop in. Don’t rely solely on people who happen upon your event that day to fill the room. Utilize Facebook events, Facebook and Instagram posts and stories, and even LinkedIn posts to reach your audience. Use Strategic Timing If your goal is to draw the public to your business event, you’ll need to schedule it for the time you see the most foot traffic, which means collecting some data. Pay attention to the days of the week and times of day your location sees the most passerby. For many downtown districts, this means weekend afternoons – but you’ll also want to ensure that you aren’t competing for attendees. Larger events can bring even more foot traffic to your area, but beware of similar, simultaneous events that could draw visitors away from your event. Create Eye-Catching Visuals Generate curiosity and capture the attention of passerby with eye-catching signage and decorations. Make it clear that an event is happening and that all are invited. Phrases like “open house,” “open to the public,” or “come on in” communicate that your event is open to the public. Vibrant banners, posters, or digital displays should convey key details about the event quickly and effectively. Colorful decorations will attract attention and create a welcoming atmosphere – not to mention make for attractive photos you can share on your business’s social media pages and website. Put Engaging Staff Front and Center Your staff is the face of your brand and can play a pivotal role in the success of your business event. Position your most outgoing, friendly employees toward your event entrance to create a welcoming atmosphere. Engaging staff can effectively communicate your brand’s message, answer questions, and provide personalized assistance, making potential customers feel valued. This level of interaction not only enhances the overall attendee experience but also leaves a lasting impression that can lead to increased brand loyalty and positive word-of-mouth promotion. Partner with Neighboring Businesses One way to use the draw of another business or event to increase your own foot traffic, rather than pull guests away from your event, is to partner with other businesses or events. Other businesses can distribute flyers, display posters, or share information about your event. In return, you can spread the word about their business to your event attendees, or even offer guests discounts for both businesses. This mutual support is a great way to expand your reach in the community long-term. Offer Discounts Everyone loves a good deal. Offering discounts can lure otherwise hesitant passerby into your event. This strategy not only boosts initial attendance but also helps create a sense of urgency. You can also promote these discounts ahead of time to your existing customers through your website, social media, and email lists. The more people are at your event, the more additional foot traffic you’ll see, as people are naturally drawn to events that appear popular. Host Giveaways Hosting a giveaway, contest, or game is another fun way to generate excitement about your event. You can offer products or services from your business, a gift basket with products from local business partners, or deep discounts as prizes. Promote the giveaway on your social media platforms and website. Encourage participants to share the event with their friends and family to increase reach and engagement. Offer Demonstrations or Presentations Live demonstrations or presentations provide a dynamic and interactive experience that engages your attendees on a deeper level. These live elements allow participants to see products or services in action, which can effectively showcase their features, benefits, and real-world applications. Moreover, live demonstrations and presentations add substance to your event, creating a memorable and impactful experience, which makes attendees more likely to generate positive word-of-mouth for your business. Host Activities Entertainment is a big draw for events of all kinds. Regardless of your end goal, there’s a creative, entertaining way to achieve it (Psst – this is BIG DEAL Company’s specialty!) Trivia about your company or products, a prize wheel, or games that require attendees to compete against each other for prizes are great interactive ways to spread the word about your products or services. Create a Photo Op Influencer marketing – using a person with the ability to influence potential buyers of a product or service to promote or recommend the items on social media – is still going strong. One simple way to encourage event attendees to post about your business on social media is to create photo opportunities. We suggest using your brand logo and colors to create an eye-catching backdrop with standout decor (think: balloon arches, floral or greenery walls, or a red carpet). Use signage to encourage guests to pose with their friends and post the photos while tagging your business and/or using special event hashtags. Props are another fun twist, especially if your event has a specific theme. Ultimately, people attend events because they expect to gain something valuable. Remember, the key is to communicate the value of your event and create a buzz that attendees can't resist: on social media leading up to your event, using eye-catching signage the day of, and with unforgettable experiences for attendees. With these strategies, you'll be well on your way to hosting a successful event that leaves a lasting impression in your community. Sustainability is a responsibility. At Big Deal Company, we take this responsibility seriously. Here’s a glimpse into how we ensure our events (and clients) leave a positive impact on the planet: Digital Transformation: Zoom, Zoom, Zoom! We’ve fully embraced digital meetings, reducing the need for in-person gatherings, and cutting down on transportation emissions. We also have moved all of our record-keeping to digital platforms, and work to keep most of our communications online, as well. By leveraging technology, we not only save time and resources but also significantly lessen our carbon footprint. Local Sourcing: From event items to printing materials, we prioritize sourcing locally. Not only does this support our community, but it also reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation. Team-wide Recycling: Sustainability starts at home! Our entire team is committed to personal recycling, ensuring that we minimize waste at home, in the office, and at our events. Comprehensive Recycling Options: We go the extra mile to provide recycling options at all our events. From dedicated bins to clear signage, we make it easy for our clients and their attendees to dispose of their waste responsibly. Reuse, Reuse, Reuse: Our commitment to sustainability extends to every detail, including event signage. We use recyclable paper for all printed signage and repurpose and reuse the frames that hold them, minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. Linen Laundering: Whenever possible, we use and launder our own linens instead of opting for disposable alternatives. This not only reduces waste but also ensures a higher-quality experience for all. Recycled Decor: Sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing style. We recycle and reuse decor for multiple events, giving each gathering our unique Big Deal touch while minimizing environmental impact. Compostable Catering: Food waste is a BIG DEAL. Whenever we’re not using china for an event, we prioritize compostable catering options, ensuring that even leftovers can sustainably return to the earth. BIG DEAL Carpool Karaoke: Transportation is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. That’s why our team strives to carpool to most events and meetings, reducing the number of vehicles on the road and the associated environmental footprint. Plus, we enjoy each other’s company - carpool time is team-building time, too! How We Help Clients Create Eco-Friendly Events:
Sustainability isn’t just a checkbox on an event “To-Do” list. It’s a BIG DEAL Core Principle that guides everything we do. Together, with our clients and partners, we’re shaping a brighter, greener future, one event at a time. Let’s make every gathering a celebration of sustainability!
